Japanese Yakisugi: A Study In "Contrasts"
Well known to be an intersection of rich traditions and world-leading technologies, home to diverse cultures, artistic styles, ideas and emotions – Japan presents itself as a study in contrasts.
Authentic Japanese Yakisugi – or charred cedar – in its many forms, exemplifies this notion. It was originally used for traditional Japanese architecture (exterior siding and fences) – however evolution in Japanese housing styles and construction methods have seen a number of different uses come to the forefront.
In recent years, the use of Yakisugi for exterior and interior cladding has attracted attention not only from Japanese architects but also from overseas for residential and commercial projects due to the weather resistance performance and unique design of the product.
We are extremely excited to be working with Japan Yakisugi ( IG: @black_charred_yakisugi ), exclusively representing their entire product line here in Ontario.
Their über-chic and ultra premium, Authentic Yakisugi comes to us straight from the 75 year old sawmill in Japan, specializing in the production of charred cedar cladding – using old growth Sugi (Japanese Cedar) timbers, pulled from their own sustainably managed forest.
We hope you enjoy this quick glimpse in to the manufacturing process of Authentic Japanese Yakisugi.

Circa 1880
Located on the shores of Georgian Bay in the heart of Meaford, ON lies the iconic Harris Building.
Built in 1880, and featuring 14″ thick cold-poured concrete walls, this amazing structure has hosted a wide variety of operations and seen many incarnations over its storied 140 year history.
Originally used to manufacture wheelbarrows, it once featured a rail line running right through the middle of the property. It continued its life as a foundry, cold-storage, footwear manufacturing and most recently, a candle factory.
We are pleased to continue the tradition of only the finest quality products being made on the shores of Georgian Bay.
